Introduction

Under the Immigration Act 1987, every person who wishes to immigrate to New Zealand needs to apply for New Zealand residence.

Residence entitles you to live, study and work indefinitely in New Zealand.

If you wish to leave New Zealand temporarily, you must have a valid New Zealand returning resident's visa in your passport, to ensure your re-entry to New Zealand as a resident.

If you are outside New Zealand when you apply, you should apply for a Residence Visa at our accredited New Zealand consular or diplomatic office. If you are inside New Zealand when you apply, you should apply for a Residence Permit to your nearest New Zealand Immigration Service branch office.
